A collaborative coverage of the Latin American and Caribbean seminar of the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, which brought fishing representatives from 16 countries to Ilha do Cardoso, São Paulo.
About the project
In November 2022, Ilha do Cardoso, in the state of São Paulo, hosted the Latin American and Caribbean seminar of the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, with representatives from 16 countries. ICSF, CONFREM and Instituto Linha D'Água invited me to coordinate a collaborative audiovisual coverage of the event. The film above is the result, published on ICSF's channels.
How it was made
A collaborative coverage is a production workshop that runs during an event. It forms a team across the stages of making a video (script, production, filming, editing), with the goal of producing videos that show what happened at the event. Participants take on the technical skills I offer and build the story together, through project-based learning grounded in educommunication.
The seminar ran for four days.
- Day 1: filming and photography practice, recording the opening and the first plenary and discussion sessions.
- Day 2: we wrote the script for the final video and began the planned filming: statements from the organising bodies and testimonies from participants on the seminar's main themes: women, blue justice, social security and education.
- Day 3: we finished the interviews and testimonies in the script, and filmed a music video with a local group, Fandangueiros de Itacuruçá.
- Day 4: final shots on a field trip with local fishers, then the team focused on the edit, so we could show a first version of the film at the closing plenary.
The team included members of the Brazilian Panel for the Future of the Ocean (Painel Brasileiro para o Futuro do Oceano), CONFREM, Instituto Linha D'Água and the Articulação de Comunidades da Ilha do Cardoso. Each of them took knowledge of audiovisual production and educommunication back to their organisation, one of the main aims of a collaborative coverage. As coordinator, teacher and producer, I learned a great deal about how the communities of Ilha do Cardoso organise themselves.
